Cleaning London: The congestion in the 19th century city led to need for clean air. Consequently, a variety of steps were taken to Clean up London. Localities were decongested, open space Greened, pollution reduced and landscape of the city improved. Large blocks of apartments were built like those in Berlin and New York which had similar housing problems. Rent control was introduced in Britain to solve severe housing shortage.

Principle of Garden City: Some attempts were made to bridge the difference between city and countryside through ideas such as the Green Belt around London. Architect and planner Ebenezer Howard developed the principle of the Garden City. It was a pleasant space full of plants and trees, where people would both live and work and it produce better-quality citizens. Raymond Unwin and Barry Parker designed the Garden City Of New Earswick. But only well-off workers could afford these houses.

How many steps were taken to clean London in the early and mid-20th century?

Several steps were taken to clean up London, attempts were made to decongest localities, green the open spaces, reduce pollution and improve landscape of the city

  •  Large block of apartment were built. It has been proved that housing scene brings a magical change in the urban area where land is very important.
  • Green belt was created around London. Demands were made for new lungs for the city and some attempts were made a bridge the differences between city and countryside by making Green belt around London.
  • Rent control was introduce to check housing shortage. Large scale of migration from rural areas to cities made a serve housing problem. By introducing rent control, government tried to prevent illegal demand of rent from the working class poor people.
  • Many working class peopkle shifted to suburbs of London. Suburbs were well planned and well connected with London. Suburbs helped to decongest London.
  • One million single family cottage were built for the working class by local authorities.
